Darwin in a nutshell

For the many years that I was a fundamentalist Christian, I had more than my fair share of exposure to the phenomena of creation “science.” And of course, everyone knows that the arch rival of creation science is Darwin’s theory of evolution. However, unlike science in the real world (where the theory of evolution was tested), creation science follows a different set of rules. Well, actually, the world ‘rules’ is probably too strong of a word to describe the method that creation science uses to acquire it’s knowledge. Creation science is much more, um, flexible about how it goes about examining facts and weighing evidence.

As a Christian I was strongly discouraged from reading the works of Charles Darwin. I have heard him called every name in the book. I have been told that he was inspired by Satan himself to write Origin of Species. I’ve heard all the clichés, like: “Even Darwin is a believer now, because he’s roasting in Hell.” “If you believe in evolution, then your uncle is a monkey.” “I didn’t come from no God D@#$n ape!” I’ve heard it all, and I used to believe it. I really believed that Darwin was literally burning in Hell beneath my feat, and I was fully convinced that anyone who believed in evolution was sure to end up frying with him. The only thing that really bothered me about the whole business was that the people who where condemning Darwin and advising me not to read his stuff had never read it themselves. I thought this was kind of hypocritical, but I went along with the flow. It wasn’t long though, about when the first cracks started to tear across my dogma dam, that my curiosity took over, and I actually read Origin of Species. What I learned in that book caused my religion to crumble, and a deluge of knowledge came flooding into my mind!

One of the things about Origin of Species that really struck me was simply the way it was written. Darwin didn’t come across like the spawn of Hell that I was told that he was. Origin of Species is a scientific work. There is very little emotion in it. It’s mostly facts; the results of a large number of experiments, and many observations on that natural world. If anything, Darwin came across to me as a very humble man. It was obvious that he knew that the conclusions he had reached would be controversial in his day, and he tried hard not to be offensive.

So, for those of you who were like me, not having read Origin of Species because of fear; fear of the punishment of your loving heavenly father, or fear of losing friends and family over it; here is Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by means of natural selection in a nutshell:

Organisms are sometimes born (for various reasons) with variation. This means that they are sometimes born slightly different from their parents. These differences are called ‘mutations.’ Most mutations are not beneficial or sometimes even detrimental to the organism. But sometimes, every once in a while, an organism is born with a mutation that gives it an edge, however slight, over other organisms that compete with it for food and other resources. This advantage will allow it to survive and ultimately to reproduce in greater numbers than it’s competition. This is called ‘natural selection.’ Over time (a lot of time!) these advantageous genetic mutations are added up and passed down to it’s descendants until there is sufficient change for the evolved organisms to be called a different species. The new and better equipped species usually ends up causing the extinction of it’s parent forms, because of their similar needs, and their struggle to acquire them, but not always. Often enough, they both find a way to survive, and that is why our world is filled with a spectacular array of different kinds of creatures.

There! That wasn’t so bad, was it? The Devil didn’t appear before you, and tell you that your soul belongs to him now. God didn’t rain down fire and brimstone on your head. You’re ok, and if you’re like me you’re probably thinking, “man, that makes a lot more sense than a magical man in the sky, forming animals out of clay, and breathing into them to make them come to life.” Evolution just makes more sense, and it has actually been tested ((gasp)), yes tested, and withstood the fiery trials of the scientific community. It is accepted as fact universally in the scientific world, and until somebody comes up with a theory that better explains the evidence, it will remain. That is how science works.

YouTube Blackout ultimately pointless

After reflecting a little bit about the recent “boycott” of YouTube, that I was foolish enough to participate in, I have come to the conclusion that it was impotent and thus completely pointless.

In response to the “blackout,” YouTube has changed nothing, and really why should they. After all, we told them we would all (the minute percentage that actually took part in it) be back in a couple of days. I can almost see the higher ups of the Google echelon giggling in amusement at our weak attempt at sending them a message.

What the hell were we thinking? This wasn’t a boycott. If we wanted to do a true boycott, we would have slammed our reasonable demands down on the desk of the corporate pimps at Google, pulled all our videos, and not come back until every single one of our demands were met! This is how you do a boycott. It is the only way to get results, and anything short of this is a complete waste of time.

With this revelation in mind, I really don’t think it is possible to stop YouTube from descending into the abyss of censorship and fascism. The vast majority of YouTube users don’t give a rat’s ass about any of this. They are there for amusement, not expression. And without the participation of a majority of users, even a true boycott is ultimately futile.

Boycott YouTube on December 19-21!

YouTube.com, once the unofficial home on the web for free-speech and self-expression has now become a cesspool of wicked censorship. YouTube’s new policies that they laid out a couple of weeks ago has spawned a fire storm of decent among the rank and file users.

Basically, YouTube will now “algorithmically demote” (censor) videos that are too political, controversial, vulgar, or that they just don’t like. This is a disgrace, and starting December 19th we are going to show them that it is not a smart business move. Join me and hordes of other YouTube users in sending a message by boycotting YouTube from December the 19th through the 21st. This “Blackout” will drive down their ad revenue, and make YouTube and their new parent company Google feel our disapproval in the one place where they can feel anything: their wallets! Please watch the below video for more info.

Movie Review - The Day the Earth Stood Still

My wife took me to see ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still,’ so I thought I would do a review of it. I am a big fan of the original. This remake, staring Keanuu Reeves, raises some very important questions, like contact with alien intelligences, transhumanism, and the fate of our planet and ultimately ourselves. Be warned, if you haven’t seen the movie yet, this podcast contains spoilers!

Here are the links that I refer to in the podcast.

Gay Christians

Last Sunday Denice and I attended a Christmas concert that was held by the Metropolitan Community Church of Knoxville Tennessee. The MCC is an organization that caters to the religious needs of the “gay, lesbian, and transgender” community. Please listen to the podcast for my comments on this event, and on the phenomenon of “gay Christians” in general.

Debunking “Supernatural” Phenomenon

I felt inspired to talk a little about certain behaviour displayed during many Christian worship services that is passed of as being “supernatural.” After spending many years as a run-of-the-mill, awe struck believer in these things, I can testify from personal experience that they are completely of natural origin. In this podcast, I focus primarily on the phenomenon that is commonly called ‘being slain in the spirit,’ which I affectionately refer to as ‘potato sacking.’ Enjoy, and subscribe!

My Road to Reason

Hello friends. This is my first audio blog. In this recording I talk about my indoctrination into Christianity as a child, and some of the key things that happened to me to bring about my deconversion from the religion. It’s about thirteen minutes long, and is the first of what will probably be many parts. I was really fricked up in the head, so it’s going to take a while to explain it all.

Zeitgeist the Movie

I am in the process of watching this fascinating documentary called ‘Zeitgeist.’ It deals with a number of different subjects, but the gist of the film is how we as a species hold grave misconceptions about the world we live in. The first few parts deal with religion. It didn’t really break new ground for me, since I have been studing this subject relentlessly for months, but Zeitgeist lays the facts out in a very easy to understand way.

A year ago I wouldn’t have touched a movie like this with a ten foot pole. The self-protecting/reinforcing mechanism that I was indoctrinated with was still somewhat functioning. It wasn’t until I took that first step, and dared to check something out that I new would challenge my faith in Christianity that the machine broke down in my mind. Today, after much research and soul search, I can say with confidence that God, Jesus, the Bible, and religion as a whole is not what most people think it is. It has a history that you may not be aware of, so if you are a believer, be warned: this documentary will challenge your belief system. If you can’t handle that, then don’t watch it. If you are ready, then you already know that you have nothing to fear.

I took the liberty of uploading the video in segmants to my Youtube chanel. Below is the first part of Zeitgeist: The Greatest Story Ever Told.

You can watch the film in its entirety here: http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com/

Taking a new direction

I’ve been going over my old posts, here and elsewhere, and it has really amazed me just how much of my writings are of a religious nature. It is a theme that has permiated almost all of my thought life. Even on subjects that have absolutly nothing to do with religion and spirituality, I still have found a way to attach it in some way.

It’s a strange thing to look back on one’s own life, and not recognize it as your own. It’s almost as if a different person had wrote all those things, but it was me. I suppose I have changes to the degree that in a way, I am a different person now. I’m like a child who for the first time realizes that there actually is no such person as Santa Claus. The deep hurt and disappointment, and the fearful uncertainty of a world that I don’t have all figured out anymore has indeed changed me.

With that said, I intend to use SpiritfX as a conduit, a portal for anyone who wishes to - to see inside my mind. I crouch here now on the cold ground, struck down by the fateful blade of reason. I no longer know what the futre holds, for me or anyone else. All I want now is the truth; no matter what that may be. If you so desire, you can discover that truth with me.

The one thing that will never exist on this site again is dogma. All ideas are welcome, but all ideas will be forced through the fierce gauntlet of science and skeptisism. I will know the truth, and damn anyone or anything that finds it’s unlucky self in my path.

Peace and freedom of thought to all!

A little INNOCENT Halloween fun

I’ve been finding a renewed sense of freedom lately. When I was a believer, there were certain things; things that I was either forbidden to do or otherwise afraid to do. Simple things, such as carving a jack-o-lantern for Halloween. I know to most people this activity seems innocent enough, but for a fundamentalist Christian, it is pan amount to Devil worship.

Well, we got ourselves a pumpkin Friday, and I carved that bad boy up with the most demonic looking face that I could muster. It was fun, and I don’t feel the least bit guilty about it. This is a small thing, I know, but for me it’s a big leap forward. I can now have a scary looking, candle lit gord on my porch, while passing out candy to little kids dressed up like demons, ghosts, and witches, and not have to repent afterwards.

I feels good to live free from guilt.
