In an instant it was over!

I saw something yesterday morning that I had never seen before, at least in person. I was working at my day job, helping the UPS guy unload his truck. My work place is located in an industrial park, that has a large open field, and is bordered by a narrow band of trees that line a stream. It’s really a beautiful place. Anyway, I was looking outside, across the field, when I noticed this little jack rabbit. He was just sitting in the middle of the field, chewing something, and minding his own business. I was just about to point him out to the UPS guy when this huge hawk landed on him like a sack of potatoes! The hawk didn’t waste any time, and strait away began pulling the poor thing’s guts out right in front of us.

As I watched the hawk do his thing with the rabbit, I was struck with how beautiful this animal was up close. I see the hawks all the time, flying around. Their beauty and grace in the sky makes it easy to forget that they are apex predators. They’re basically killing machines with feathers. As cruel as this sight was, I thoroughly understand that it is very necessary. Without the hawks, the rabbit population would explode, and they would eventually run out of food and starve. And without the rabbits, the hawks would starve. Even though they seem like mortal enemies, they really do need each other. It is the balance of nature.

As I watched this unfortunate rabbit, meeting his gruesome end at the beak and talons of the hawk, I was reminded of how we are. We all get up in the morning, thinking that we have our whole life ahead of us. We go about, doing our own thing, and seldom ever think that this day could be our last day. But the truth is that it very well could be our last day. So, with that in mind, I just wanted to ask you a couple of questions, and these are questions that I often ask myself…

Are you ready? Are you really, really ready?  The Bible says that “it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.” You are going to die, my friend. It is a biological fact. And when you do, the only thing that’s going to matter is what did you do with Jesus Christ?

And the other question is, are you living your life to the fullest? Are you really making it count? Are you living your dreams? You’re not going to get a greater opportunity than the one you have now to really make a difference in this world. If you haven’t done the things that you want to do in your life, that’s ok. Today is a new day. Seize it!
